Rules

  1. If the pronoun is acting as the subject of the sentence, use the appropriate subjective pronoun.

  2.     a) Before an action verb

                    Ryan studied hard for his exams. (Subject: Ryan)

                    He studied hard for his exams. (Subject: He)

        b) Before a linking verb

                    Joshua is tall. (Subject: Joshua)

                    He is tall. (Subject: He)

    Note: Watch for sentences which draw a comparison

                    Joshua is as tall as Lesley. (Subjects: Joshua, Lesley)

                    He is as tall as she. (Subjects: He, she)

     

  3. If the pronoun is acting as the object of the sentence, use the appropriate objective pronoun.

    a) After an action verb

                    The noise distracted Frank. (Object: Frank)

                    The noise distracted him. (Object: him)

    b) After a preposition

                    Give that gift to Evelyn. (Object: Evelyn)

                    Give that gift to her. (Object: her)

  4. If the pronoun precedes a gerund, use the possessive form of the appropriate pronoun.

          Let's discuss your being hired for the position with our company.

GERUND (an "ing' verb acting as a noun)

Use the possessive, YOUR.

Choose the appropriate pronoun in the following sentences.

  1. I wanted to see that movie with Judy and (she/her).
  2. The Smiths and (they/them) went on vacation to Hawaii last winter.
  3. I did not do as well on my exams as (he/him).
  4. Why don't you let Joanne and (I/me) drive you to the hospital?
  5. I was very surprised to hear about (he/him/his) refusing the promotion.
  6. (She/Her) will show (we/us) the way to Tim Hortons.
  7. (We/Us) students really look forward to going home for Christmas.
  8. (You/Your) singing off-key is distracting me.
  9. I was thrilled to see the sale advertised at Wal-Mart, but I was not as thrilled as (she/he).
  10. Don't forget to tell (he/him) and (I/me) about your plans.
  11. Did (she/her) really say that about (he/him)?
  12. Since the weather is nice, let's take the baby and (he/him) to the park.
  13. I wondered if (she/her) would accept my offer.
  14. Were Sandra and (he/him) surprised to see you?
