India
Cambrian College continues to have a strong presence in India through a variety of partnerships and activities. The College has been involved in the following projects:
In 1995, Cambrian College and Nachimuthu Polytechnic (Pollachi, Tamil Nadu) signed a five year Memorandum of Understanding, which was renewed in 2000. Among the highlights of the partnership:
Staff Exchanges
Air Conditioning and Refrigeration - A Cambrian faculty member spent a year in India to develop a technician course in Air Conditioning and Refrigeration. The year included training staff to teach the cours and to use the equipment, developing curriculum and evaluation tools, setting up a laboratory, and introducing teaching methods such as DACUM and CBE. The Program began enrolling students in January 1998.
Continuing Education Course Development - A staff member from Cambrian's Continuing Education department spent six weeks at NPT in the fall of 1998 assisting in the design and establishment of an autonomous Continuing Education Department at NPT.
Desktop Publishing and PageMaker - In the fall of 2000, a Cambrian staff member spent four weeks in Pollachi teaching desktop publishing and PageMaker concepts to staff at NPT and MCET to assist them in establishing a desktop publishing centre and short-term training curriculum.
Book Donation
In the spring of 2000, Cambrian donated over 31,000 out-of-circulation books to NPT and local school libraries as part of the collaboration between the institutions. This was the second such shipment in the past four years. The next shipment will be sent in December, 2005.
Cambrian Office
In December, 2000, Cambrian President Frank Marsh officially opened the "Cambrian Office" at NPT in Pollachi. The event captured the strength of the commitment by both NPT and Cambrian to their continued collaboration and pursuit of joint ventures.
Environmental Education Project
This four-year project was developed in response to a recognized need for trained personnel in a variety of sectors who possess the environmental knowledge and technical skills required to help address the country's serious pollution problems. Through the project, the partners plan to 1) define a process for industry and community involvement in environmental education at NPT; 2) revise courses in two program areas: Textiles Technology and Automobile Engineering to integrate them into a new two-year Environmental Technician Diploma; 3) develop and adapt other modules for the Environmental Technician Diploma; 4) train trainers in Competency Based Education (CBE) and DACUM; 5) investigate the feasibility of establishing and Environmental Assessment Unit at NPT; 6) develop equity policies/guidelines to increase the participation of women in technical education; 7) participate in public awareness campaigns; 8) support four Canadian students on work placements at NPT.Start/End:
