READ THIS FIRST - Note from Greg

" Thanks to those who participated. Eleven out of a possible fifteen (73%) students responded. In the "numeric" portion of the survey, the results seem to be positive overall. With the exceptions as noted, and the negatively worded questions, responses fell in the "I strongly agree" or "I agree somewhat" category. The course objective questions "OB", showed a range of responses, but this is expected since it is the early part of the course. This area should improve as we proceed through the course.

In the "written" portion of the survey, you have provided many constructive and insightful comments. I appreciate your candor and thoughtfulness. I've responded to several of the comments. Overall, there seems to be satisfaction with the way the course is progressing so far.

As promised, these survey results are now a public document at my homepage at http://homepages.cambriancollege.ca/gbcooper . I'll also be notifying your program coordinator and our Dean of the results. I intend to use the data to improve this course"..........................Greg

Tips to help you understand the stats

  1. "N=11" refers to the sample size, or the number of students who answered the question(s).
  2. The "-" column refers to the number of students who chose to NOT answer that particular question.
  3. The "Mean" represents the average response for that question. For example, a mean of "1.5" means the average is somewhere between a "1" (I
strongly agree) and a "2" (I agree somewhat).
  4. The "SD" or "standard deviation" refers to a measure of how widely dispersed the values are from the average value (the mean) based on our sample, which is relatively small (N=11) It's like a "plus or minus" value that qualifies the range of each mean.

Overall results at a quick glance

Choices: 1 = I strongly agree, 2 = I agree somewhat, 3 = I'm neutral, 4 = I disagree somewhat, 5 = I disagree strongly

Students' written comments

One thing I like about this course:

No. Response
1 Finding out your grades online.
This is one of the easiest WebCT features to implement. Encourage your other instructors to try this and send them my way if they need assistance!...Greg
2 To me it is a very valuable course. once we get into the working world, it is something we will be expected to know and expected to do. I like the content and the structure of the course and the fact we are using both computer formats (PCs and Macs).
3 the instructor shows alot of entusiasm in his work and that helps in the process of learning.
4 the fact that u can see what your doing as the web page is being designed.
6 I like the fact that I am learning how to create a web page and will be able to use it in the future.
7 I like the course material that we cover in this class. I think it will be useful for my future career plans.
8 The teacher is always avalable and willing to help.
9 Greg is very helpful out of class. He takes time to explain concepts that we do not understand. He is also very into his work and that reflects positively on the class.
10 We have an enthusiastic teacher.
11 The friendlyness of the instructor

One thing I dislike about this course:

No. Response
1 When designing webpages, we have to follow formats. So far there's hasn't been to much room for creativity.
You're right! We start with the basics with a simple tool that doesn't allow for much else. But we will move onto flexible tools and projects where you WILL be much more creative!...Greg
2 Greg is well organized but spends too much time at the beginning of the class telling us what he is going to do in class. As a result in our one hour class on Monday, Greg usually runs out of time before he can get through the material. He should give a review of what is going to happen then get into it. This way he can spend more time on the material and reexplain it if nessecary without worry of running out of time.
Thanks for the tip. Although I like to start things off with an overview of what's to be covered in each class, yes, there is room for improvement in this area....Greg
3 I dislike using the Mac computers
Get used to them! You may end up in a PR/Web Design/Graphics shop that uses only Macs. We're only giving you an overview in the first half of the course. We'll do most of the production work in a Windows lab....Greg
4 the amount of time not spent in the lab, getting kicked out of other labs is anoying.
See me if you need a permission slip.....Greg
6 the computer are a little slow sometimes but, i guess that's not your fault, right?
7 I dislike the fact that a portion of the work is done in the mac lab and the other half in a pc lab.
See my previous comment on Macs...Greg
8 I find that it moves very fast. I would like it if it were a litlle slower pase
9 He seems to know his material so well that it can be a little overwhelming at first.
10 nothing
11 The material is hard to grasp with the time allocated

One thing I would improve in this course:

No. Response
2 The course should go more indepth into the way web pages work.
We will go into more depth (HTML tags, Javascript, META tags, forms, etc. as the course progresses, is this what you mean?...Greg
3 I have a hard time grasping the overall basics of the course and wish I had more time to work on the projects. I have doing my work half ass.
4 more time alotted in the lab.
6 My understanding of creating a web page
7 I would have only used on lab, preferably a pc lab to make learning less complicated, since i am not as familar with the macs.
8 The speed that it is at. More time to figure things out or instaling a projector in the Mac Labs for visual explanation
9 Not much because it is a learning experience and WebCT is quite an interesting tool.
11 the time of the classes must be more for the students to have a good understandin
Several previous comments are similar to yours - not enough time! We only have three hours per week, and lots to do. If students feel this course would be better served with four+ hours, offer the feedback in this forum AND to your program coordinator and/or advisory committees....Greg

I have one additional comment:

No. Response
1 Overall the course is fun.
I agree! If it isn't fun, it isn't worth doing!...Greg
2 Greg is a good instructor. He gets the material across in a fashion that I think is well understood. He does what he can to help students and is available after class time to help. And he RETURNS phone calls promptly.
3 I see that greg shows alot enthusiasm in his work and I think that that is important in teaching. when a teacher shows that he likes his work, it helps in the learning process. He looks like he is proud of his work and really enjoys his job.
4 This course is one that i feel should be looked at as more important than others the new work market will all be done on computers and our chances of getting a job are more likly to improve with courses like this one.
6 I am really enjoying this course and I actually look forward to attending it.
7 i have to related comments, occaisionaly I find the pace too fast, when I am not understanding what we are doing. However, when i understand I find the pace slow. This may be because others are ahead and I am behind or I am ahead and others are behind. (I hope that makes sense to you)
8 Overall this is a good class to take.
9 I actually enjoy this course thoroughly. It is challenging and stimulating and also entertaining.
10 I think you shoul offer this course in the Graphic Design program
Speak to your program coordinator...Greg
11 Please allow the grades to have a sufficiant curve for the QUIZ #2 we didn't have enough time to complete
As a class, we decided to structure the assessment as the best four out of five quizzes for the course. That way, you're not penalized for the technical problem we experienced that day, and those who did well and didn't experience any difficulty aren't penalized either....Greg
