READ THIS FIRST - Survey Summary

Thanks to those who participated! 37 out of a possible 56 students (67%) responded. Thanks for taking the time to add your written comments - they are insightful and add a lot to the overall quality of the survey. See them now. They validate or point out problems with issues identified in the survey questions. Overall, there seems to be general satisfaction with the course and there is high confidence in all twelve core outcomes, even before the course is completed! This would indicate that some students are comfortable with course content PRIOR to covering it. There were no major areas of concern and improvements have been observed in almost all categories since the first survey. This suggests we are on the right track!

As promised, these survey results are now a public document (at my homepage at http://homepages.cambriancollege.ca/gbcooper ). I'll also be notifying your program coordinator and our Dean of the results. I intend to use this data to improve this course and in future classes. Thanks for your participation.........................Greg

Tips to help you understand the stats:

  • "N=37" refers to the sample size, or the number of students who answered the question(s).
  • The "-" column refers to the number of students who chose to NOT answer that particular question. There was one student who answered none of the questions (ie: submitted a blank survey)
  • The "Mean" represents the average response for that question. For example, a mean of "1.5" means the average is somewhere between a "1" (I strongly agree) and a "2" (I agree somewhat).
  • The "SD" or "standard deviation" refers to a measure of how widely dispersed the values are from the average value (the mean) based on our sample, which is relatively small (N=37) It's like a "plus or minus" value that qualifies the range of each mean.

1 working with the OS and learning how to support it ... a base class from the Network + or equivalent would be a great asset in understading the network portion of the course
2 the amount of class time spent working on labs and lectures. I think hands on experience is more important than teachers spending 2 hours of a 2 hour class lecturing. Lecture is boring
3 Everything is layed out very good and is tought in a well thought out manner.
4 The instructor is always willing to help.
6 Greg is a pretty cool teacher and I enjoy his class.
7 That you can work at your own pace.
8 We can work at our own pace to a reasonable point. The teacher brings a good environment and attitude to the class making working easier and more interesting. We work with our computers everyday making the learning easier and a lot faster. The teacher uses humor and encourages free speech and feedback in the class making it a more comfortable environment. Plus he encourages hawaiian shirt Friday! :)
9 How everyone knows what they're doing and that everyone has fun in the class.
10 One thing I really like about this course is the ability to talk about the tests in WebCT with peers and the instructor
11 Its fun.
12 Plenty of time to complete lab assignments.
13 Its fun
14 The mass amount of pratical work. Instead of theoretical
15 n/a
16 Doing the actual labs
17 The fast evaluation through WebCT
18 The content that prepares us for future MS OSes
19 Teacher's willingness to assist the students.
20 There is a certain amount of freedom given in the classroom. I don't feel pressured to get things done.
21 Good equipment availble to students to use
22 The flow and relaxation of doing the Modules at your own pace. You can go really fast but the students that have trouble still get to have time to finish it up!
25 Good Teacher And Learning Environment
26 It is something that can be implemeted into the work world
28 Learning different functions available with Win XP
29 Independence
30 Good working environment
32 The way things are handled
33 I like how we're learning about new-age technology that will be important to us, rather than technology we will never see.
34 no complaints yet
35 I get to use computers.
36 Hands on experience & online tests (WebCT)
37 They way it run in a relaxed atmosphere
38 it's interesting

1 from the book ... more in detail of what is said on some subjects
2 I can't really think of anything I dislike.
3 nothing.
4 The Lab setup
6 nothing
8 Nothing..there is nothing wrong with this class.
11 Repetitive
12 Nothing.
13 Windows XP The book, its really hard for me to read the chapters and do the labs. All these things I already know how to do through experience, I just HATE learning the annoying little details. Things I really dont care about and really will never use make me not want to read this book.
Think of it this way...someday you'll be supporting someone who doesn't know the details, but wants to! Use the book as a future reference manual for tech. supoort, or as a guide to help you prep for the 2272B exam...Greg
15 n/a
16 It's a new course so even the teacher does not have all the questions all the time
17 The need for supervision in a computer lab that only people with caddies have access to.....
I made myself available for make-up labs after hours, as long as you folks planned ahead. I was only asked once to do this...Greg
18 Class size. The class is way too big for one teacher. Often times it takes in the upwards of 10 mins to get the teacher to come over to help because he has to go on to 10 others before you.
One reason why I went with the strategy to allow folks to work ahead, put all homework online, and let students work on different modules at any given time. Not a perfect solution, but I've noticed improvement since the beginning of the semester, have you?...Greg
19 Not enough lab time.
20 The network setup.
21 no communication established between cety 21 and cety 22 students
This could be an opportunity to seize next semester. Other than our WebCT course (both sections participate in discussions and email), Cambrian's Open House, and some Friday afternoon get togethers, what other communication could be looked at?...Greg
23 you can work at your own pace, but that doesn't help if the curiculum isn't ready for where we are
25 Nothing
26 The online tests with the select all answers
I've agreed to modify SOME questions on the last test...Greg
28 Everybody is at different places in the book, so when your flipping through pages just to get caught up to were everybody else is, it makes it frustrating because you didn't really learn the previous chapters, you just went through the step by step and moved on to the next... So ya you did it, but can I do it by myself with no book? The answer to most is no!!
I expect that you read the module before coming to class. Learning starts there. The exercises (practical portion) is what we cover in lab PLUS an overview of the theoretical material (slideshows), PLUS online lab review questions, PLUS online review quiz for each module, and in-class Q&A and discussions and sometimes even online discussions, which completes the learning...Greg
29 Very hard tests
30 Crappy mouse, sticks too much
32 The caddies
33 I dislike how this course is only alloted two times a week.
34 no complaints yet
35 Early wake up time on thursday mornings.
36 1) Everyone seems to be at diffrent places, making it difficult to follow class discusions. 2) Class size is far too large!
37 the size of it
38 the book

2 I would like to learn how to create an RIS and how to create a network boot disk to be able to install windows from remote locations. As opposed to just installing it with a pre-made disk.
This is one of the topics you'll cover in an upcoming server/network course. We only did the basics of installations and remote services in this course...Greg
3 MONITORS! :)
4 Use VMware or Virtual PC for installing the operating system.
Yes, this would help. I think we'll be looking at physical hard drives (no caddies) and running the lab as a domain in 2005...Greg
6 The microsoft book could be better.
Hmmmmm....Content is well-organized, learning outcomes clearly stated, lots of review questions, and one or two CD-ROM's (depending on the version you purchased) with animations, movies and extra material, such as review quizzes. There's always room for improvement, but this book is a good start...Greg
8 Nothing..I say don't fix it if it isn't broken!
11 N/A
12 Nothing.
13 Time managment. Tell the students more what they should be doing. The freedom is nice, the fact that we are not being hounded on 24/7 for work to be handed in, but at this point I really dont know where I stand in terms of what needs to be completed.
Sorry, I had hoped this is exactly what I do cover in the first 5-10 minutes of each class, such as: "Here's the module objective, work in pairs today, notify me on lab B, exercise 2, complete the online lab review and online review quiz, etc. etc." I release all grades in WebCT, and you can check your grades/status anytime. If this isn't working for you, what would help?....Greg

18 More networking... Like setting up Domain Servers with XP and stuff.
You'll get more of this using Windows Server 2003 in upcoming courses...Greg
19 Having a Lab Monitor and extra time in the class to fully complete the labs at our own rate.
20 the whole hard drive caddy issue
21 a schedule of labs and modules to fallow to keep up so that students aren't caught off guard with extra material making it's way onto test like with module 7
That's why I warned class several times BEFORE the test that we were behind and had some ground to cover. Sorry if you were caught off guard. It put some pressure on us to get the last module in before the test. We almost started module 9 but folks agreed that it could be left until the last test...Greg
23 the preparation before the class... ie waiting for dhcp to be disabled
25 Nothing
26 The online tests would be better
28 More walk through with the chapters, so we all get a chance to do it together, and then do labs on our own........
29 Tests
30 Upgrade the mice
32 The caddies and hard drives puit into each computer
33 Impliment more online labs.
34 nothing really
35 Can play solitaire when done all work that is needed to be done.
36 1) Smaller classes 2) Move everyone through course material (mods) at the same rate (students who get through quickly, could help others)
37 Haveing a smaller class size.
38 it was a little slow getting started

2 I like the online quizzes where you can continue to do them till you have them right. I think this will help with peoples grades, maybe the difference between a pass and a fail, or a b and an a.

18 The test wording can be a little better. Some questions have more than one possible right answer so marks should be awarded for those answers with 2 posibilities. Furthermore, part marks for lists would be nice too.
See my comment above...Greg
19 Lab Monitor.
20 Course is running a lot smoother than it was at the begining of the semester. Glad to see the confusion has dicipated!
21 I didn't like being informed of module 7 being added to test 2 just days before the test. It meant digesting alot of new information in little time.

Thanks for completing this one. I think they help me and students tremendously, and WebCT enables me to compile results and stats instantly....Greg
