Note from Greg

" Thanks to those who participated. 22 out of a possible 46 students responded (48%). You have indicated consistent or increased comfort levels on ALL but one of the fifteen core course components. You also expressed strong support for how effectively I have implemented constructive suggestions from the previous surveys. THANKS! This confirms that the time both you AND I have invested was worthwhile! Throughout the course, you have indicated how important the WebCT site is as an instructional resource, and indicated that you use it frequently. (There were over 1600 hits - that's an average of approx.35 hits per student.) Finally, you have indicated that "you are learning something" and are satisfied with the course overall. In areas for improvement, you have provided many excellent constructive suggestions. I'll be able to follow through on many of them. Read them in the 'responses to written comments' section.

Overall, thanks for your efforts. These surveys not only help me become a better instructor, they benefit you too! You have been an active participant in improving your learning environment and this will give you food for thought in future courses. As promised, these (and the previous) survey results are now a public document (linked from my homepage at http://homepages.cambriancollege.ca/gbcooper   ). I'll also be notifying your program coordinator and our Dean of the results. I intend to use this data in future classes (hopefully, ones with you!) and I'll encourage future CET1200 professors to take a look when planning this course."..........................Greg

Tips to help you understand the stats

  1. "N=22" refers to the sample size, or the number of students who answered the question(s).
  2. The "-" column refers to the number of students who chose to NOT answer that particular question.
  3. The "Mean" represents the average response for that question. For example, a mean of "1.5" means the average is somewhere between a "1" (I strongly agree) and a "2" (I agree somewhat).
  4. The "SD" or "standard deviation" refers to a measure of how widely dispersed the values are from the average value (the mean) based on our sample, which is relatively small (N=22) It's like a "plus or minus" value that qualifies the range of each mean.

One thing I like about this course:

ID Response
1 The last project enabled me to aquire contacts and extend my personal network. Just like that english book said to do.
2 This course allowed me to learn about HTML coding and web page design. I can now say that i am comfortable with both these aspects considering i knew nothing about web page design before i entered this class.
3 different styles of learning
4 The opportunity to learn new apps.
5 Tfhe casual pace, assignements are given in with plenty of time to complete them. Lost of in-class time to do the work. It takes the pressure off - especially because of our regular work load.
6 It was great
7 Learnig about web page construction
8 access to the teacher at all times was a really nice thing especially the way that you were always there to help if you found us in the lab. and that we were introduced to multiple editors
9 WebSite/Online/WebCam
10 this web class is cool
11 The Web-page building
13 I like the fact that we go at our own pace, with very few holdbacks.
14 isnuseing different soft ware
15 learning how to make a web page
16 the fact that i know more about the internet and how web pages are made and maintained
17 I find it very interesting and fun to learn...
18 Learning to build web sites
19 Learning to design web pages is fun and a good skill to learn
20
21 Learning relevant skills that I can apply to the working world, like building web pages for myself or others. Learning the basics about web browsers and html in Word and Power Point.
22 WebCT website is an excellent idea. This has been my favourite course of the year.

One thing I dislike about this course:

ID Response
1 Lack of [students]* for peer helping.   *my edit - Greg
2 Not enough time to complete some projects that require a lot of thinking and planning.
3 nothing, i like everything
4 Not enough time on final assignment to do all the proper channels.
5 Never really knowing exactly what to study for tests or where to get the correct answers. When we complete our assignements we usually have a variety of tasks to complete and not everyone is doing the same thing. When test time comes around if we haven't had the time to explore all the avenues we're stumped!!! Actually having one module to study from would be helpful since we don't have a book.
6 not enough time to do everything
7 not being able to attend everyday
8 the limitations that we encountered in theory class just because we only have this course for one semester
9 Lack of GoGo Dancers and cold beer, with the exception of the online portion.
10 this course is not all that great
11 Too Casual
13 not much
14 lots of brain work
15 How little i know but how much it seems I am expected to know.
16 not much time spent on how to use the programs to edit html
17 Not enough tutorials on how to use the software (powerpoint, hotdog, paintshop pro, etc...) efficiently...I spent too much time learning the software and then there was not enough time left to effectively complete the assignments.
18 searching for info about the search engines
19 I had difficultly doing the assignments in class (the ones i completed). I found easier to stay focused alone at home doing the web pages because it was easier to stay concentrated. With all kinds of people around I could not get into the creative zone.
20
21 The lack of content. There is no reference to previous work done on projects similar to those we have finished with which to look on for guidance or direction.
22 creating web sites in class is helpful but I personally am better off designing them on my own time unless I have questions or want extra help.

One thing that would improve this course:

ID Response
1 Less 'busy work' material at the beginning of the course and more application of what we learn to the business environment.
2 Give more time for certain aspects of the course such as web page design part.
3 nothing
4 Getting the assignment outlines online sooner.
5 See above.....
6 more on HTML
7 html
8 the tools that we use should not have to be re-installed every class it waste's to much time it's not like we really do that much anyway's
9 Include GoGo dancers and cold beer into the curriculum. Also ethernet conection to the network from the pub would be a great thing indeed.
10 take linux right out of the program
11 Have more field trips...
13 Possibly put the final project up earlier next time, so the students can get familiar, and plan for, the details of the project.
16 maybe have a month of class or a couple of weeks were the teacher can take us step by step trought one or more editors and show us how to use it to it's full potential instead of trying to figure it out through trial and error.
17 More in-class instruction on how to make web pages interesting...eg graphics, javascript...
18 more access to the lab
19 Title every assignment major. It seems to motivate me to do it. It would have been nice to have had the course outline in class (it wasn't available at the time)so we could have gone over the mark breakdown. I was unaware that the assignments (minor) were 20% of the final until mid semester.
20 nothing yet
21 Add lessons on basic web page constuction.
22 javascript or programming in java would be nice but one thing at a time i guess.

I have an additional comment:

ID Response
1 No I don't have one additional comment...except SCHOOLZ OUT FOR THE SUMMER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!(except for software concepts) SCHOOOOOOOOOOLZ OUT FOR-EVER!!!!!!!!!!(not bloody likely for us, oh well at least we'll be makin $$$$$$)
2
3 didn't we already do this quiz??????? weird!!
4
5 I really enjoyed learning Web design, I only wish we had more time to explore with it, maybe learn basic java etc...
6 Have a great summer
7 Thanks for a fun and laerning experience Greg and have a good summer.
8 Thanks
9 Greg deserves a raise or a least a teacher of the year award.
10 thanks greg for the semester
11 Greg is an excellent teacher
13 I've enjoyed the course for the most part, and am happy with the amount I've learned from it. Thanks Greg.
14 it was agreat course and i hope to pass
15 We need more time for the final project. Time. More.
16 Overall i would say this class has been fun and exciting
17 Thanks Greg,....I really enjoyed your class this year. I look forward to maintaining and improving my website as time goes by (and as I become more knowledgeable through online tutorials).
18 Have a great and successful summer
19 Great personality, very cool
20 no sir
21 I came here with only limited knowledge of Windows '95 and now I can show other people tricks or how to do things they may not know, on a computer.
22 two thumbs up for web enabling tech.

Some responses to written comments

ON THE ISSUE OF:  "...NOT KNOWING WHAT TO STUDY FOR TESTS..."
This issue was identified previously and my response was to provide review questions at the end of every module. This was also addressed in many classes prior to the test, such as pointing out which modules and projects would be included, and what types of questions would be asked. This didn't work for you?

ON THE ISSUE OF: "...NOT ENOUGH TUTORIALS ON HOW TO USE THE SOFTWARE...", & "MORE STEP-BY-STEP ON THE EDITORS..."
Although there were only a few "step-by-step" on-line tutorials available on customizing browsers, for example, we did spend considerable time in our Friday lectures with demonstrations and "guided tours" of several products such as FrontPage 98 and assorted smaller editors. We also utilized some newer PC remote control technology to provide in-class demos during lab time, during the last 4-5 weeks of the semester.

ON THE ISSUE OF: "...LACK OF CONTENT. NO REFERENCE TO PREVIOUS PROJECTS..."
An excellent suggestion. Although we did spend time critiquing sample Web sites (remember Ian M.'s presentation on "Web sites that suck"?), I would have liked to showcase projects that students have previously completed. I can't do this for you now, BUT I CAN do it for future CET1200 students. That's why I asked for your permission to showcase your final "corporate Web projects".

ON THE ISSUE OF: "...SPEND MORE TIME ON THE WEB PAGE PART..." & MORE ON ADVANCED FEATURES LIKE JAVASCRIPT, JAVA, ETC...."
I agree, and we spent a lot of time early in the semester covering the basics leading up to the Web projects. There's lots of room for improvement for this new course, and this will have to be worked out with the CETY program coordinator and Dean. Lots of possibilities here.

ON THE ISSUE OF: "...MAKE INFO ON PROJECTS & ASSIGNMENTS AVAILABLE EARLIER..."
Yes, I should have made the information available sooner. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to work too far in advance. Now that I've run through this course once, I don't think there would be any barriers to releasing information earlier.

ON THE ISSUE OF: "...COURSE OUTLINE AVAILABILITY..." & "UNAWARE OF WEIGHT OF PROJECTS..."
The on-line course document contained all the details about evaluation & weights.  The course breakdown and assessment weights were also located in the "course info" section at our WebCT site. I also went over this in class at the beginning of the semester, didn't I?
