READ THIS FIRST - Survey Summary
" Thanks to those who participated. 11 out of a possible 14 (79%) students responded. This participation level has been consistent on all three surveys. Overall, you seem to have been satisfied with the course and, again, have made several good suggestions for improvement. I've responded to several of your written comments. Read them now. There are some trends worth noting:
- There are consistently high gains and overall satisfaction in the content questions and all of the course objective questions. ("CO" and "OB" questions) This is particularly noteworthy, because it means we have accomplished what we set out to do in this course.
- There is consistent overall satisfaction (except as noted) in the other key areas - presentation, interaction, overload, class management and longitudinal areas. ("PR", "IN", "OV", "CM" and "LO" questions)
- Although there were losses noted in the "textbook is used" and "web site is useful" questions, this doesn't appear to be a problem because the overall satisfaction for both items was relatively positive. (means for both questions on all three surveys was somewhere between "I strongly agree" and "I agree somewhat".
- A large gain in the "uses previous surveys..." question is especially gratifying to me - it means the time we have invested in completing these surveys and implementing constructive changes where possible has been worthwhile for all of us.
- Once again, there are many thoughtful and constructive suggestions for improvement. I intend to implement some of these ideas in the next cycle. Thanks for taking the time to provide the written comments - these are a crucial part of the course survey, especially for a new course.
As promised, these survey results are now a public document (at my homepage at http://homepages.cambriancollege.ca/gbcooper ). I'll also be notifying your program coordinator and our Dean of the results. I intend to use this data to improve this course and in future classes. Thanks for your participation. Tips to help you understand the stats
- "N=11" refers to the sample size, or the number of students who answered the question(s).
- The "-" column refers to the number of students who chose to NOT answer that particular question.
- The "Mean" represents the average response for that question. For example, a mean of "1.5" means the average is somewhere between a "1" (I strongly agree) and a "2" (I agree somewhat).
- The "SD" or "standard deviation" refers to a measure of how widely dispersed the values are from the average value (the mean) based on our sample, which is relatively small (N=11) It's like a "plus or minus" value that qualifies the range of each mean.

One thing I like about this course:

felt rushed. Also I would of liked to have more time spent on Front Page or Composer to

but our clients just expect us to do everything. Even compose text for them. That's why you "negotiate" who does what in the project contract. Don't be shy when it comes to asserting yourself and taking on only what you can handle. The client has to do their share. If this doesn't work, set the goals at a slightly lower mark....Greg |

program such as front page or composer. ON THE ISSUE OF HTML TOOLS, SUCH AS FRONTPAGE: The suggestions to spend more time on one tool instead of a "taste" of several makes sense. Many of you expressed concern with the wide variety of tools you were learning to use for the first time. It may be more appropriate to demonstrate only the various tools, which is one of the course objectives, but spend more detailed instructive time on just one, such as Composer or FrontPage, in order to achieve the practical goal. I'll consider this and recommend it to the coordinator when I'm planning the next cycle....Greg |

| 3 | Find a way to not switch the time table in the
middle of the semester. You are finally in a routine and it changes on you. It's a little
hard to adjust to. Yes, the switch from Tuesday mornings to Thursday mornings was somewhat inconvenient. The rationale was to give you exposure to BOTH Macintosh and PC platforms and tools, as specified in the course objectives. Unfortunately, running the Mac lab on one day and the Windows lab on another was the only way this could be scheduled. I hope the future benefits gained from the new knowledge and familiarity with both platforms will outweigh the inconvenience....Greg |

| 5 | The computer labs. The "p" drive
wasn't even working and I lost my project. The time given on the last project. Our teacher
sometimes confuses us with his answers to questions. I need your help here. You need to let me know that I didn't give a satisfactory answer, so I can try an alternate strategy. Yes, the "P" drive did give us some problems, but there were workarounds we discussed in class and were used successfully by several students. Sorry it didn't work for you...Greg |

a good understanding of the work assigned. There were lots of strategies in place to assist students who were having difficulties. We did lots of "demo" sessions within the allotted lab & lecture time, several informal mini workshops were held outside of class time (since my office is just next door to the lab), and one planned session was scheduled. Sorry none of these worked for you. What other strategies would you suggest?....Greg |

projects. We must publish web pages for this course so cambrian should have space for
students in this course to publish too, we shouldn't have to depend on free publishers.
When there are problems with the free publishers it can really affect the students grade
at no fault of their own. Some of our tuition should go to this if needed, but Cambrian
should have space so students do not have to rely on free publishers but should have space
at Cambrian. See my following comments....Greg |

| 10 | Teach me how to make your own counter. For a FrontPage Web site, try this: (1) use your favorite image editor to create a nine-digit strip "0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9", with a transparent background and a consistent empty space between each digit. The space bar can work, but you'll have to experiment a little. Use colors and fonts to match your overall site theme/design. (2) save this as MYFILE.GIF in any folder in the FrontPage web site. (3) in the FrontPage editor, select "insert", then "active element", then "hit counter" (4) now select "custom image", instead of one of the ready-made counters (5) write in the path such as "IMAGES/MYFILE.GIF" or wherever you put it when you saved it. (6) That's it! You can set the number of digits displayed and "seed" the starting count as you would with the standard counters. Good luck!.....Greg |

from 3 hours. The lecture class should also be 2 hours long to cover all the material
needed to learn. You need to communicate this to your program coordinator and advisory committee, they authorize these types of changes....Greg |

| 8 | Free space should be provided for students of
this course to publish their websites to. When there are problems with the host, the
student is penalized. This shouldn't be. It doesn't take much to have space for students
to publish too. If they can afford 28 million for a new building I'm sure they can afford
to set up space for student web pages so that the students can be graded on work not on
the host sites useability or lose marks because the host site is having problems ON THE ISSUE OF WEB HOSTING SPACE: (1) The decision to use free Web hosting service was mine, not the college's. This corresponds with the course objective to learn how to publish and register a Web site at at a provider's host server. (2) At no time was a student penalized for technical problems at the server end IF you notified me of the problem before the project was due AND you could document the problem. (Many providers send a notice to members or post a memo at the homepage - a copy of this was sufficient.) This was something we discussed on more than one occasion in lecture and lab. (3) A strategy we can employ in the next cycle is to use Cambrian's FrontPage server, since FrontPage could be a tool we can focus on. In fact, some students did just that, because their client wanted it on the Cambrian server. I should be able to request project Web space on the server in the future (that's what the project "P" drive was for also, but there were technical difficulties.)
