READ THIS FIRST - Note from Greg

" Thanks to those who participated. 11 out of a possible 15 (73%) students responded. You are consistent, since 73% of you completed the first survey. Overall, there seems to be satisfaction with the way the course is proceeding, especially in the areas of: content, presentation, interaction, and class management. There was a significant improvement in the comfort level (knowledge and skills) in the course's core learning outcomes. The average mean dropped from 2.136 to 1.621, a difference of 0.516. (A "1" = "I strongly agree" and a "3" = "I'm neutral".) This means that you are already comfortable with the main objectives in this course - a good sign! Thanks for the positive and insightful written comments - I've responded to some of them below. Go there now.

There are some areas noted for improvement:

As promised, these survey results are now a public document (at my homepage at http://homepages.cambriancollege.ca/gbcooper  ). I'll also be notifying your program coordinator and our Dean of the results. I intend to use this data to improve this course and in future classes"..........................Greg

Tips to help you understand the stats

  1. "N=11" refers to the sample size, or the number of students who answered the question(s).
  2. The "-" column refers to the number of students who chose to NOT answer that particular question.
  3. The "Mean" represents the average response for that question. For example, a mean of "1.5" means the average is somewhere between a "1" (I strongly agree) and a "2" (I agree somewhat).
  4. The "SD" or "standard deviation" refers to a measure of how widely dispersed the values are from the average value (the mean) based on our sample, which is relatively small (N=11). It's like a "plus or minus" value that qualifies the range of each mean.

Students' written comments

One thing I like about this course:

No. Response
1 I like the class in general. It is helpful now and will be helpful in the future.
2 It is interesting and fun. We are learning valuable information for our futures.
I always say "If it isn't fun, it probably isn't worth doing!" I'm glad you find it this way...Greg
3 I like the way Greg teaches the coarse. Although it is difficult at times he makes it interesting and fun!
4
5 Learning about HTML
6 it is highly organised and the teacher makes me feel confortable about a course that otherwise i wouldn't feel confortable about.
7 It's extremely challenging.
8 It will help me in the future, and the course is well structured.
9 I like to see the end result of my web document.
10 Web Page Building
11 the humour and personalized teching

One thing I dislike about this course:

No. Response
1 I dislike the class being at 8 in the morning.
2 Class at 8 a.m.!
3 There is a lot of material that has to be covered in a short amount of time.
4
5 not enough class time
6 no complaints excellent!!!
7 It's hard to grasp certain concepts.
8 The time, I wish there was a little more time to apply and to undertand the work that needs to be done.
9 The quiz tests.
10 Not enough time to work and learn about building web pages
ON THE ISSUE OF TIME:
See my opening remarks. There's lots of room for improvement here....Greg
11 8 in the morning is to early

Back to top of page

One thing that could be improved in this course:

No. Response
1 I would make the class 4 hours becuase we always seem rushed through everything.
2 I would not improve anything at this point in time.
4
5 labs that we work in
6 have notes or test reviews on the webct, it could be used as a study tool also, students may post their notes or what they feel will be on the next test and help each other to study.
7 More help is needed during lab time.
8 Answering the questions on the Modules before the tests. Class time that would be a litlle longer.
9 Have a basic Macromedia demo.
ON THE ISSUE OF OTHER SOFTWARE TOOLS:
Several students have suggested focusing on just a few tools, not several as we did. For example, HTML coding by hand, ONE tool like FrontPage, ONE image tool like PhotoShop, ONE animator like Flash, etc., instead of leaving it open. In other words, become more specialized in fewer tools, then mediocre in many, right?.....Greg
10 More lab time
11 a touch more time to do assignments

Back to top of page

I have one additional comment:

No. Response
1 The course content is very informative and helpful for people who do not know anything about web page design.
2 Greg is a very intelligent and dedicated teacher. He motivates us to take our assignments one step further.
4
5 Course is a good one, but for people who do not catch onto computer terminology it can be a little difficult.
6 no comment
7 This class covers an extreme amount of information in a short period of time.
8 Overall this is a great class and the instructor is always available to help. If only all instructors were like that! Keep up the good work Greg, it's much appreciated.
9 I enjoy this course and I wish there were more teachers like Mr. Greg Cooper.
With your constructive feedback so far this semester, and the rapport we've all come to enjoy, the course has been a great one for me, too!....Greg
