READ THIS FIRST - Survey Summary

" Thanks to those who participated. 22 out of a possible 24 (92%) students responded. Excellent!...Again!

Overall, we seem to have successfully dealt with most of the concerns that were brought up in the first survey, especially in the areas of covering more HTML tools, since some early material was a duplication of previous courses. This issue is on the agenda for May-June curriculum review department meetings. Again, the concern for use of the textbook is noted, and the question will be worded differently in the final survey to reflect the online nature of our readings and tutorials.

Some specific positive results in the comparison with the first survey are noteworthy:

(1) A large gain (.26) was noted for the question "The Web site(s) is (are) used effectively in this course." This is a strong endorsement for our use of WebCT and related resources. Obviously, this is a tool you consider important and one I should continue to use.
(2) You gave me a "perfect" 1 out of  5 for the question: "The instructor treats students with respect." This is an important aspect of any course, and it's gratifying to see we're on the same wavelength. I will endeavor to maintain this high standard!
(3) A large gain (1.27) for the question on learning objective # 5: "I am able to use HTML publishing tools to create and modify Web productions." This was an area of concern in the previous survey, and at this point in the course, you obviously have made significant progress.
(4) All six of the major learning outcomes (the point of the whole course!) were scored consistently high - in the "I strongly agree" or "I agree somewhat" categories. This is a strong affirmation that we have accomplished what we set out to do at the beginning of the course. However, there is still room for improvement.

As promised, these survey results are now a public document (at my homepage at http://homepages.cambriancollege.ca/gbcooper  ). I'll also be notifying your program coordinator and our Dean of the results. I intend to use this data to improve this course."..........................Greg

Tips to help you understand the stats

  1. "N=24" refers to the sample size, or the number of students who answered the question(s).
  2. The "-" column refers to the number of students who chose to NOT answer that particular question.
  3. The "Mean" represents the average response for that question. For example, a mean of "1.5" means the average is somewhere between a "1" (I strongly agree) and a "2" (I agree somewhat).
  4. The "SD" or "standard deviation" refers to a measure of how widely dispersed the values are from the average value (the mean) based on our sample, which is relatively small (N=24) It's like a "plus or minus" value that qualifies the range of each mean.

Students' written comments

One thing I like about this course:

No. Response
1 Creating web pages
2 The fact that the teacher actually listens to what the students are saying.
This works because the students are interested in telling the instructor something!...Greg
3 It's accesible from any internet ready computer...
4 learning new tools for web design
5 Laid back relaxed atmosphere
6 One thing I like about this course is that we are learning to create web pages.
7 You are free to make the best of your time, and work at your own pace to some extent.
8 Its interesting stuff to learn about.
9 I am enjoying learning how to make a web page
10 All the homework is available online!!! Due Dates and everything. Every course should have WebCT
Encourage your instructors to contact me for a quick overview of WebCT....Greg
11 We are being assigned projects that are leading us towards knowledge of web page designed.
12 The overall atmosphere of the classes are kept fun and interesting.
13 I am learning and understanding more about Internet stuff and how it works.
14 Find it more interesting than most of my other courses.
15 The enthousiasm which it stirs up within myself.
16 WEBCT makes lives so much easier
17 i'm liking the webCT stuff.
18 It is a very relaxed and fun course.
19 were starting to learn html
20 I like the fact that I am learning about something that I am Interested in. The fact that it is also the up to date material that I am learning.
21 Web CT excellent tool Greg!
22 Great Teacher who listens to the students, and can joke around with us. The material is presented to us, so that it seems interesting and stimulating.
23 The Hands on experience
24 The freedom we are given and the creativity we can use for each of our assignments

One thing I dislike about this course:

No. Response
1 8am class
2 not know which labs are to hand in
Hmmmmm...I usually make this announcement at the beginning of each class (or lab), but you're right - I could be clearer. I'll try to improve on this...Greg
3 Nothing :)
5 this text is just to avoid the message box
6 One thing I dislike about this course is the THREE hour lab!
7 I am starting to fall behind in understanding things that are being taught. Did not have any previous experience to rely on. Should be a requirement for the course.
We DID cover a lot of material in a short period of time, so falling behind is understandable. Did you see me about this? I am always available after class (Check my schedule posted on my office door, then you just have to track me down!) and Fridays have been a great time to answer questions and demonstrate various software tools and techniques. Did this work for you?...Greg
8 Too much research, its very time consuming
9 Too much research
10 The lab is before theory class, stupid schedule.
Sorry, I can't fix that type of problem. Although I asked for the lecture-lab in that sequence, we're given the best possible schedule, given that lab 2158 is one of only two labs in the college where we're allowed the flexibility & freedom we need  (install our own software, change configuration, etc.), and the requests for this lab occupy all available hours....Greg
11 We are not actually being taught. We are given assignments that require us to learn how to do certain things...but we are not actually being taught how to do these things.
I consider this a great compliment! You have just summed up the perfect post-secondary education course, IMO! I realize this isn't the comment you might have been expecting, but I see my role as a facilitator, not a "fill-er-up!" deliverer of academic content.

At this level, I don't believe in dumping large quantities of information into students, for short-term memorization and subsequent rapid disposal. My goal is to help you learn material, knowledge & skills that are practical, applicable and meaningful to you and your future employers. If I do my job properly, it is likely that the lessons learned in this course are ones you will use over and over, long after this semester is completed. For skill-specific experience, like learning how to use a particular software tool, we do need to use strategies like "show-n-tell", or demonstrate procedures, etc., and we have done this frequently in many of our classes (lab & lecture). Has this worked for you since you completed this survey?.....Greg

12 I would much prefer to be learning the various web enabling technologies such as frontpage, javascript, xml, asp... and less time reseaching browsers and free email providers.
We spent extra time and introduced new modules (more HTML, more FrontPage 2000, and JavaScript). I hope these worked for you.....Greg
13 I find some of the labs very time consumming sieving through information on the net figuring out what is important and what is not.
That's why I have the review questions at the end of each unit. Do these help?....Greg
14 easy
15 zero
16 Friday class at 2:00 pm
17 more html, keep it coming!
18 I find it very difficult to make the friday class. It is the only class most of us have on that day.
19 not enough html.
20 I don't like the fact that Wenesday's Class goes til 5 o'clock.
21 edited...Greg
22 nothing really.
23 Nothing
24 The fact that our class time is divided into a three hour class and a one hour class. Seperate classes would spawn more productivity because the students wouldn't bail out an hour early if the three hour was split up. My wording is unclear bit i think you'll get what i mean
I understand what you mean. We have been using that configuration in the other section. (ie: 2 hour lab + 1 hour lab split) There doesn't appear to be much difference in the numbers compared to your section (3 hour lab)....Greg

Back to top of page

One thing that could be improved in this course:

No. Response
1 nothing
2 outside access to share drive
3 Nothing :)
5 same as above
6 I would try to schedule the 3 hour lab class as a two hour lab and a 1 hour lab...maybe even have the 1 hour lab right after the 1 hour lecture.
7 More lecture time or maybe optional lecture time for those who are struggling, or have questions, or concerns.
I would be willing to schedule additional times - just ask! It's probably too late at this point, but I hope you were
8 Nothing
9 More class discussion and learning instead of the research
10 Clarification on what actually has to be handed in.
11 Less independant research and more in-class teaching.
12 Spend more, "some" time on the above mentioned topics
13 would like to know the right answers to labs before the test
14 less talk about basketball
Sorry. I get carried away sometimes. I was very enthusiastic about this because it was an activity initiated by the SOTY students and I had the privilege of being invited out....Greg
15 At this point I am blind to any possible improvements.
16 No improvements are needed at this time
17 html
18 I would make this a hardcore wed design course and get some very advanced things.
19 More HTML!!
20 I would make this course into two parts. Taken two different semester. I don't thing there is enough time to learn the material. I think that the first two sections of this course should be one class and the final chapter another course, where instead of just one web that we are responsible for creating we should have 2, as well as, some short assignments while we are building these web sites.
21 nothing
22 I can't think of much, umm let us drink at our computers.. haha
23 More access to computers
24 What i menntioned in question 30... the division of our 4 hours of class.

I have one additional comment:

No. Response
1 none
2 none
3 Nope :)
5 don't make text box entries required
6 I we should have time in a class room with us at computers and you at a computer with a projector so you can go over step by step the modules we do and show us specific examples of what we are supposed to do. I also think you are still speaking too fast...sometimes I miss which modules have to be handed in and when...maybe wright on the modules when it is due ... IF it is due.
Yes, there are some good suggestions here. This strategy was attempted on the extra HTML unit, FrontPage 2000 and JavaScript units. Did this work for you?....Greg
7 Keep up the great work, you obviously enjoy your profession.
8 Don't have one.
9 Some topics are discussed like we all have a knowledge of the Internet and we don't
10 A hunter shoots a duck on a farmers property, the farmer sees this and argues that the duck should be his. He suggests that they kick each other in the you-know-what and whoever screams the loudest loses the duck. The farmer volunteers to go first, the hunter kicks him as hard as he can and the farmer screams extremely loud. The farmer then say "ok, your turn now" the hunter picks up his gun and his ammo bag and says "F*** that, you can keep the stupid duck!!!"
A three-legged dog walks into a wild West saloon, and in a gruff voice (as most dogs will use), says: "I'm looking for the man that shot my Paw."....Anonymous
11 I feel that this is a very important course for the people in our program and I appreciate the knowledge that I am aquiring...however, all of it is being aquired from the internet. The same learning could be done with a list of assignments at the start of the semester.
12 none
13 I like the course and find it very interesting
14 www.sudburyscene.com
15 No.
16 Can you incourage other teachers to start using WebCT for all courses?
Excellent idea! I frequently do. You can help, too!...Greg
17 wish more classes would do this webct stuff.
18 I really enjoy the course. I actually don't mind behind at 8am.
19 This question is useless... Question 9: The texbook is used effectively in this course.
I agree. I hadn't modified the question in time for the second survey, but it will be for the final survey...Greg
20 I like my teachers. He seems to know what he's talking about. He never makes me feel uncomfortable around him. He is friendly, kind, and considerate. The class size is just right. There aren't to many people. Class is quite will you work. The teacher is alway there to help. I think that there should always be an assistant like Joe to assist his fellow student.
I'll assume you meant Larry C., our End User Support student, who helped out every week and did the "Extra HTML" unit....Greg
21 this course is excellent it teaches the subject of the web so well, and the instructor really helps us out but why is there always a textbook question on these surveys when their is no textbook for the course?
See my previous comment....Greg
22 This is by far the best class I am taking right now, that is based on the teacher, the work, and the atmosphere in the class.
23 I enjoy WEBCT
24 I think the course and curriculum are fun and stimulating. Greg is a good guy and i heard he has a mean cross-over
