READ THIS FIRST - Survey Summary

" Thanks to those who participated. 26 out of a possible 27 (96%) students responded. EXCELLENT! The written comments are especially helpful and help me gain a better insight to your perception of the course. This also means that we feel the investment in time & effort is worthwhile!

Overall, there seems to be general satisfaction with the course so far but there's always room for improvement. Some specific exceptions are noted. Your numeric responses to the questions are generally in the "I strongly agree" or "I agree somewhat" categories (or equivalent in the negatively worded questions). However, for course learning objective #5 , "I am able to use HTML publishing tools to create and modify Web productions", there was clearly a concern, (mean response = 2.77) but at this point in the course, that is normal. We deal with this objective more directly in the upcoming modules and this should improve. The textbook question needs to be modified, since our "book" is a series of online articles, guides and related Web sites. Understandably, the "textbook is used in this course..." question received general disagreement. I'll modify the question on the final survey (since the second survey is in progress as I write this).

Overall, the written comments are positive, but you have also identified some key concerns. I've responded to some of the individual comments below. I have edited and/or omitted some names of students or staff specifically mentioned in your comments. Comments in italics and bold are mine. Here's a summary of one major concern and the proposed follow-up.

ISSUE: The apparent repetition of some content in the first module from a previous course. As a direct result, not going into enough depth on some of the more advanced topics in this course. After checking with the instructor of the prerequisite course which ran in the Fall of 2000, there is room for improvement. Thanks for pointing this out.
FOLLOW-UP:
Immediate - this is what I can do now. (1) we added an extra HTML unit (image maps, tables, forms) courtesy of Larry C.'s formal End User Support presentation. (2) there will be an additional unit added (lecture and tutorial) on Javascript. (3) without dropping any of the current topics, slightly more emphasis than originally intended on topics like HTML tools (e.g. FrontPage) where possible.
Longer Term: this issue has been identified to the Program Coordinator and scheduled for the program curriculum review agenda in the May-June period. I will suggest the first module be removed entirely (if appropriate) or drop the topics previously covered, and the overall course enhanced to include more in-depth coverage of additional topics that are typically covered superficially.

As promised, these survey results are now a public document (at my homepage at http://homepages.cambriancollege.ca/gbcooper  ). I'll also be notifying your program coordinator and our Dean of the results. I intend to use this data to improve this course and in future classes"..........................Greg

Tips to help you understand the stats

  1. "N=26" refers to the sample size, or the number of students who answered the question(s).
  2. The "-" column refers to the number of students who chose to NOT answer that particular question.
  3. The "Mean" represents the average response for that question. For example, a mean of "1.5" means the average is somewhere between a "1" (I strongly agree) and a "2" (I agree somewhat).
  4. The "SD" or "standard deviation" refers to a measure of how widely dispersed the values are from the average value (the mean) based on our sample, which is relatively small (N=26) It's like a "plus or minus" value that qualifies the range of each mean.

Students' written comments

One thing I like about this course:

No. Response
1 I am learning about things that I did not previously know.
2 Nothing as of yet, because I know all that has been taught to me already. It's been a month so far this semester and we haven't learned anything new in any course.
See my general comment in the summary above....Greg
3 Its easy because I know most of the stuff already. Its pretty much common sense.
4 Nice atmosphere. Makes it easy to finish your work on time.
5 The hands on practice we get is excellent!
6 Enjoy the teachers attitude
The feeling is mutual !...Greg
7 The fact that the class is not actually treated as a "class", a very relaxing atmosphere with little or no pressure.
8 It allows me to become more familiar with different software and the Web. It also allows me to learn new and valueable thing, that will assit me in the future, in searching for a job at the end of this course.
9 It's fun, it's easy, but at the same time informative.
10 Material learned in this class will be useful in the future. Good teacher as well *no sucking up intended...but hoping to get an A* "hint" jk
11 The laid back attitud in the workplace and the instructors ability to communicate with the student. I find myself looking foreward to coming to this class much more then i would going to instructor A or instructor B's class, they don't communicate with the students they just throw information at us and expect us to know it all already.
Why not encourage your instructors to run a confidential "mini-survey" to identify these issues?...Greg
12 Greg, he's really open to our ideas, you don't see that too often in a teacher, he's not condescending like alot of teachers and is very friendly and helpfull. Steve Levesque
Thanks, but don't forget, the atmosphere is a product of both "sides" working together....Greg
13 The ability to work at my own speed, and be able to work from home.
14 we have lots of online lab time.
15 I can see where we are going with it...I don't yet know enough to know what we are really going to learn, but I can see that the tools that we pick up along the way will be a great help.
16 The use of applications that I would actually use in my free time.
17 it is preparing me for things i'm going to need to know
18 It is teaching me how to effectively use the Internet.
19 The class size is not too big.
20 The instructor is quite down to earth.. definately appreciates our feedback to the point of begging for it.
Hmmmmm...begging? Let's just say I insisted!!!....Greg
21 Learning different aspects about the Internet ans search engine Keywords.
22 The internet aspect of the course.
23 Is that the instructor is not totally straight laced and boring. He is honest and you know where you stand in the course.
24 The fact that there is not a big, heavy book to carry around for this course
25 I am learning more about the internet and vocabulary associated with it.
26 the hands on work with PP.

Back to top of page

One thing I dislike about this course:

No. Response
1 I find the lab assingments a little vague a diffucult to know how much detail to go into.
I try to emphasize what's important in the "activity" portion of the modules, with specific instructions about detail, if necessary. For example, Module 3 Unit 1 on the Yale Style Guide - what sections, introductory sections only, and use the review questions as your guide. Does this work for you?...Greg
2 Nothing as of yet, because I know all that has been taught to me already. It's been a month so far this semester and we haven't learned anything new in any course.
See my general comment in the summary above....Greg
3 Not enough of challenge
4 I don't really know where we are heading? Are we making web pages or is this a continuation of CET 1110?
Remember our first class when we covered the overall core course objectives? I think we covered where this course would take you in the working world, what knowledge & skills this course will help you develop, etc., the relationship to your other courses. If you're still unclear about this, review the course outline, or the objectives for the online modules, then come and see me to discuss it further...Greg
5 That is it only one semester long!
6 none so far
7 Not really the course, I just have a strong dislike for a few of the students.
Sorry, I can't help you there. Don't forget - in the future, your employer will expect you to work in teams. You may not like the person(s) you work with, but you WILL have to get along with folks to complete projects. Use your time in the program to explore & develop this important skill. If I misunderstood your comment, and there's a "class disruption" factor involved, don't hesitate to see me so I can deal with it...Greg
8 That it is so late in the day.
9 Nothing
10 When a computer crashes (doesn't happen often but it can happen and it's a bummer when it does)
11 nothing really, well that whole Friday class thing, haha, but hey i don't mind the class, so it is all good.
12 I'm not always sure what is to be handed in for the labs.
13 If you do not enter the program with a background knowledge of computers and programs, it is difficult to keep up.
14 to many research assignments so far, not enough hands on assignments, and power point doesn't count because we took that last semester.
See my general comment in the summary above....Greg
15 I don't really dislike anything about this course yet.
16 It's too early to tell.
17 there is a lot of research
18 Nothing
19 You talk too quickly...I miss hafl of what you are saying during the lectures.
Sorry - I would suggest this: just give me a "slow down" or "timeout" hand signal in class. I'll try to improve on this. Keep me posted of my progress...Greg
20 Friday's class being my only class all day, and it's at 2:.
21 I find it a little slow for myself I want to start creating web pages using my current knowlege. Then building onto those web sites using knowlege I'm learning during class.
22 I am not riding a scooter on fridays.
As long as there is no liability/legal/injury - related issues...you can borrow mine. I hope you're wearing a Hawaiian shirt on Fridays, at least!...Greg
23 The use of only one person in labs to help others.
24 nothing
25 I am unclear on what to study for and do no know if the answers i have found are right. sifting through info is time consuming and i don't like guessing about what is important or not.
The objectives at the beginning and the review questions at the end of each module will help you determine what's important. You have an additional opportunity in Friday classes to bring up any concerns on previous modules. How about the online test reviews? Do they help?..Greg
26 The fact we have to come in for the one class on Fridays.
Yes, I understand. That's why we make it a "fun" day, with Hawaiian shirts, my scooter, lots of "heads up" content, review, demos, etc. Is this working for you?...Greg

One thing that could be improved in this course:

No. Response
1 Spread out the lab times, not all 3 hours in the same day.
2 Learn Html or something that is really important
We will, but good point. See my general comment in the summary above....Greg
3 Get into the good stuff like HTML and Java.
See my general comment in the summary above....Greg
4 web pages from day one
5 "If it ain't broken, don't fix it"
6 timeslots
7 Its all pretty good (although a keyboard driver would of been nice!)
8 Time the class is running at, because till 5 is a little late.
9 No opinion yet,as I haven't takenthe whole course.
10 Faster computers :)
11 nothing really I like this class.
12 Make the share drive available online at home. this applies to all courses.
The shared drives are "IntraNet" or on-campus resources only, just like AcadNet. For Web-related projects, such as FrontPage, Cold Fusion or HomeSite, we can have access to the college Web server. Just ask me! Otherwise, try one of the free online "storage" resources, such as "50megs.com" or similar...Greg
13 Nothing so far. The course is excellently laid out.
14 Drop all the the free email research, majority of ppl have free email and know how to use it, and go more directly into web page development
See my general comment in the summary above....Greg
15 Again...I don't have enough inormation yet to determine how to improve this course.
16 It's too early to tell.
18 More time spent on how to do effective searches
We will (or did). Did this work for you?...Greg
19 Speak slower.
20 At this point I can think of nothing. It being the first few weeks of the semester I am yet to find anything wrong.
21 Maby the speed of the course.
22 Get everyone a scooter, so we could all enjoy the fun.
23 Adding another lab advisor to help with labs.
24 no 8 am classes
25 Give the correct answers after each lab. Clearer idea of what is wanted
We have been taking up the modules in Friday's class. Does this work for you?...Greg
26 Other then the time slot on Friday the course is great.

I have one additional comment:

No. Response
1 None
2 I think i said all there is to say.
3 Love the Hawaiian day. All we need is Honolulu girls dancing around. haha
4 Hanging with Mr. Cooper is cool
5 This is probably the one course im not stressed out about.
6 I am anxious to continue on in this course
7 Not really, keep up the good work Greg
8 I really think that Greg Cooper is a good teacher. He understands that since I have a learning disability that I require certain extra things and he has tried to accomadate those things, and he is very knowlegdeable about this class and the internt. He seems to know what you ask, even if your not too sure what it is that you what. You can ask a question and he'll answer it and if he's not sure he will research it. I think that he should be commended on his teaching ability, and that he is always will to lended a helping hand. Also, our class assistant is very helpful so far. He seems to know what he is talk about. And that he is willing to learn new things. So in conclusion, I am very satified with the service that I am receiving.
9 Nope :)
10 No additional comments.
11 Hey as I said befor I dig this class, keep up the good work!
12 Why do 7-11's or TigerExpress/Esso's have locks on their doors if they're never closed? Hey Greg, what kind of snowboard do you have?
If it's "cargo", why is it always carried on trucks? A K-2 and a Blakeley Division 23...Greg
13 I have never noticed a teacher to be so well organized, and efficient.
14 This course has the potential to be a real great course, the only thing holding it back is wasting 4 weeks so far and repetitive and general knowledge.
See my general comment in the summary above....Greg
15 So far, the course is enjoyable...keep it up.
16 If you're paddling a canoe in your back yard, and one of the wheels falls off, how many pancakes does it take to shingle a doghouse?
42, fish & Tuesday. I hope this answers your question...Greg
18 No comment
19 Do examples of what we have to do in the labs during our lectures...ie: how exactly do we find out how to register a site? I still don't understand from last days lecture.
We actually walked through the process in a Friday class (up to the actual "submit" step) for Yahoo!. If you're still unclear, please see me...Greg
20 I have left several questions unanswered due to the lack of time gone by in the semester
21 none
22 Keep up the good work, and buy scooters for all of us.
Will do. Please remit cash or money order for $50.00 plus tax, shipping & handling, sign the weasel clause waiver, and I'll see what I can do!...Greg
23 Gregs is a nice guy.
24 This class is fun
25 Why would you put a survey question on the test?
Because I wanted you to take the time and look at any of the previous surveys. As I have mentioned frequently, they're an important component in our course. This was one way to motivate you! I hope it worked...Greg
