Cambrian College Honours Students' Achievements

Cristy Gavan, a student in the Human Resources Management program at Cambrian College is this year’s recipient of the Elizabeth Freelandt Student Leadership Award and one of hundreds of Cambrian students who will be receiving awards at the annual ceremonies, which take place on Tuesday, February 24 and Wednesday, February 25 in the Student Centre at Cambrian College’s Barrydowne campus.

The Elizabeth Freelandt Student Leadership Award was established in 2007 to honour students whose formal or non-formal leadership qualities have had a positive impact on the Cambrian College environment. It was established by and named after Betty Freelandt, the then Vice President, Student Services and Strategic Initiatives, who passed away in November 2008.

Gavan, who at one time worked as a student employee in Freelandt’s office, considered Freelandt a personal and academic mentor. “Betty was a strong advocate for student leadership and was the first to encourage students to help others,” said Gavan. “I learned from her how to offer assistance to my peers and classmates, and to get involved in every aspect of the College.”

Gavan is also being awarded the Students’ Administrative Council Bursary. She said the awards, besides being a great honour, will help her financially. The single mother of an 11-year-old daughter said the decision to go back to school posed financial challenges, but was one that she’ll never regret. It was, after all, how she met her mentor.

More than 400 scholarships, awards and bursaries, totaling close to $350,000 will be given out at the Cambrian Foundation awards ceremonies. The ceremonies are a celebration of both the academic success of Cambrian students and the commitment that many individuals and organizations have made towards enhancing the overall student experience at the College.
